About NATS Boston
The National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Boston Chapter was formed in 1949. It is the local chapter of the larger parent organization, The National Association of Teachers of Singing based in Jacksonville, Florida (www.nats.org), the largest association of teachers of singing in the world. Since its inception, NATS-Boston has been a very active chapter, holding master classes, panel discussions and presentations with master teachers, famous singers, voice and speech clinicians, and speech pathologists many times during the academic year. As stated in the National Mission, the Boston Chapter strives “to encourage the highest standards of the vocal art and of ethical principles in the teaching of singing; and to promote vocal education and research at all levels, both for the enrichment of the general public and for the professional advancement of the talented.”
Our members (over 150 strong) come from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, and our ages and experience range widely. We teach in over 50 music schools or university music departments, in clinics and private studios, and combinations of all of the above; many of us are also current or former performers. Our members approach the mechanics of the speaking and singing voice from many perspectives: physiological, psychological, and artistic. Many who years ago were involved as student participants in the Festivals, are now themselves members of NATS Boston Chapter.
We host Boston area Student Auditions each year (Music Theater & Classical music), which provide opportunities for students to audition for written comments, an invaluable learning tool for the singer and often reinforcement for the teacher as well. Monetary prizes and encouragement medals are awarded. In addition, students of chapter members are eligible to compete in the NATS National Student Auditions, the NATS National Musical Theatre Competition, the NATS Artist Awards (NATSAA) for professional-track classical singers, and the NATS Hal Johnson Spirituals Competition.
Our membership is open to members of the NATS national organization in good standing. We hope to serve people interested in sharing their knowledge of the human voice — not only with their students, but with each other — as teachers , instructors, coaches, and clinicians.
The closed door of the voice studio can create a somewhat isolated environment, and NATS Boston is the perfect place to find a teacher, or if you are a voice teacher, to feel right at home and take advantage of our offerings.
We welcome you to explore our website and its many features, and to attend our events! Happy singing!
